Bernard Hill, the acclaimed actor renowned for his performances in blockbuster hits like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Titanic, has passed away at the age of 79.

Hill immortalized the character of Theoden, King of Rohan, in the beloved fantasy films based on JRR Tolkien’s novels, as well as portraying Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s epic disaster movie.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his agent, Lou Coulson, to the BBC, who revealed that Hill passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning (5 May). A statement from Hill’s family is expected to follow soon.

The actor’s legacy extends beyond Hollywood blockbusters, as he also left an indelible mark on British television with his iconic portrayal of Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale’s seminal drama, Boys from the Blackstuff.

Hill’s remarkable career spanned both critically acclaimed dramas and box office hits. He became the only actor in history to feature in more than one film that won 11 or more Oscars, between Titanic (1997) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).

Scheduled to appear at Liverpool Comic Con this week, Hill’s unexpected passing prompted heartfelt condolences from the event’s organizers on Twitter/X, reflecting the sentiments of many in the entertainment industry.

Folk musician Barbara Dickson also expressed her sorrow on Twitter/X, reminiscing about their collaboration and highlighting Hill’s exceptional talent.

Hill, born in Blackley, Manchester, on 17 December 1944, rose to prominence with his compelling performance as a working-class Scouse man in The Black Stuff, a role that resonated deeply with British audiences.

His filmography boasts a diverse range of roles, including appearances in Gandhi (1982), Mountains of the Moon (1990), and Madagascar Skin (1995), among others.

In Titanic, Hill delivered a memorable portrayal of the ill-fated ship’s captain, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Hill’s portrayal of Theoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy remains one of his most iconic performances, capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Reflecting on his time on set, Hill fondly recalled his experience on the Lord of the Rings, describing it as immensely enjoyable and rewarding.

His final role in the Martin Freeman-led police drama, The Responder, serves as a testament to his enduring talent and versatility.
