When a 6-month-old dog named Bella arrived at the Wisconsin Humane Society, something immediately caught everyone’s attention – or rather, one of her legs.
The 50-pound pup, surrendered on April 15, had an unusual gait, with her back right leg appearing wider than the other three, resembling a flipper.
Upon examining Bella’s X-rays, the mystery was unraveled: she had two femurs, two tibias, two fibulas, and nine toes – essentially, a fifth leg.
“I initially thought someone might be playing an AI prank on me or tampering with a photo in Photoshop,” said Angela Speed, spokesperson for the Wisconsin Humane Society. “I’ve never encountered anything quite like it.”
Bella’s condition was diagnosed as dimelia, a congenital anomaly so rare that it marks the first case encountered in the 145-year history of the Wisconsin Humane Society.
After consulting with external veterinarians, it was determined that since Bella didn’t seem to be in any discomfort, her extra leg could remain untouched. However, Bella does experience some mobility issues, so her future adoptive family should establish a close relationship with a veterinarian.
“It’s quite challenging to predict how Bella’s life will unfold in the next six months, two years, or even five years,” remarked Speed. “But as of today, she’s a content and healthy pup.”
Described as a “unicorn of a dog,” Bella enjoys eating chicken, treats, and going on walks. She is currently up for adoption.
“We’ve never met anyone like her,” Speed added.
The Humane Society hopes that Bella’s story will draw attention to the animals in their shelters, especially considering the increased intake compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Throughout 2024, shelters nationwide, including the Wisconsin Humane Society, have faced significant challenges,” Speed elaborated. “Currently, we’re experiencing reduced adoption demand alongside increased intake.” It’s creating bottlenecks.”
With over 1,800 shelters taking in more than 529,000 animals since the beginning of the year through March, the organization emphasizes the importance of adoption. Despite the challenges, over 324,000 adoptions have been completed, and nearly 59,000 animals have been reunited with their owners.
