The British government has announced a series of measures targeting Moscow’s intelligence activities in the United Kingdom, including the expulsion of Russia’s defense attache, Maxim Elovik, over allegations of espionage.
Home Secretary James Cleverly stated that these actions were in response to what he described as the “reckless and dangerous activities” of the Russian government across Europe. Alongside expelling Elovik, identified as an “undeclared military intelligence officer,” the government will revoke the diplomatic status of several Russian-owned properties suspected of being used for intelligence purposes. Additionally, new restrictions will be imposed on Russian diplomatic visas and visits.
Cleverly cautioned against expected accusations of Russophobia and conspiracy theories from the Russian government, stating that such tactics would not sway the British people or government. The Russian embassy in London denounced the restrictions as groundless and promised an appropriate response.
Relations between the UK and Russia have long been strained, with accusations of targeted killings, espionage, and cyberattacks. The UK has previously sanctioned numerous wealthy Russians and taken measures to combat money laundering, particularly in London’s property and financial markets.
The latest actions follow criminal cases in London alleging espionage and sabotage linked to Russia. The government cited reports of Russian interference in military aid for Ukraine in Germany and Poland, as well as espionage activities in Bulgaria and Italy, alongside cyber and disinformation campaigns and airspace violations.
Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasized that these measures send a clear message to Russia that its actions will not go unanswered. Elovik, who has been in the UK since at least 2020, was reportedly summoned to the Ministry of Defence on the day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. He has been observed paying respects to Soviet soldiers who died during World War II in both London and Manchester.
